On 14 May 2009, the Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, John Key, announced that the Budget would allocate $50 million over three years for the New Zealand Cycleway Project. This exciting new tourist attraction has been inspired by the success of existing New Zealand bike trails, such as the Otago Central Rail Trail. New Cycleway Research Report now availableNew Zealand’s cycling market has the potential to more than double the amount of money tourists spend annually – from $320 million to $640 million. That’s according to a new market research report released by the Ministry of Tourism today. The report says this estimate is heavily dependent on New Zealand getting the product (cycle tourism) right, providing safe trails with good support services and amenities - including accommodation and information – and investing strongly in marketing the entire experience. * Download the full report (PDF 4.2MB, 119 pages) New Zealand Cycleway Quick Start TracksPrime Minister John Key has named seven potential cycleway routes that construction could start on this summer.
