16 day top of the South Island & sea kayak self-guided cycle tour

Our combination tour, with 14 days cycling to the top of the South Island and two days guided sea kayaking in the stunning Abel Tasman National Park.

This tour takes you from Christchurch to Kaikoura and the spectacular Pacific Ocean’s coastal scenery. Then it’s on to the vineyards of Blenheim, before the relaxed pace of Nelson and the Marlborough Sounds. From Nelson it’s through to Mapua and Motueka, before taking to the water and sea kayaking from Marahau in the Abel Tasman National Park to end the trip.

Brief Itinerary

Day 1 We will meet you at your accommodation in Christchurch with bicycles and equipment and you then cycle to Waipara.
Day 2 Waipara to Hanmer Springs
Day 3 Hanmer Springs to Mount Lyford
Day 4 Mount Lyford to Kaikoura
Day 5 Sightseeing day in Kaikoura, where you can take in a whale and dolphin watching tour, swimming with the seals, or any of the many other attractions
Day 6 Kaikoura to Kekerengu
Day 7 Kekerengu to Blenheim
Day 8
Rest day in Blenheim/visit the vineyards
Day 9 Blenheim to Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds
Day 10 Anakiwa to Rai Valley
Day 11 Rai Valley to Nelson
Day 12 Rest day and sightseeing in Nelson
Day 13 Nelson to Marahau (Abel Tasman National Park)
Day 14 Guided sea kayaking in the Abel Tasman (staying in the National Park)
Day 15

Guided sea kayaking in the Abel Tasman National Park and return to Marahau and then transfer back to Nelson

Day 16 End of tour or continue on our 19 or 28 day top of the south tour to Christchurch/Queenstown.

Equipment Included

  • Trek Mountain Bike for touring (with road tyres) brought to your accommodation and personally fitted or Mongoose Randonneur specialist touring bicycle [700c wheels & drop bars]
  • Ortlieb Rear Pannier Bags, front handlebar bag and comprehensive repair kit
  • Detailed itinerary, maps and notes on points of interest that you will pass
  • You can upgrade to an Avanti Vivace road bike available in combination with daily luggage transportation, contact us for further details

Accommodation

14 nights accommodation in twin rooms with bathroom ensuite (where available), in carefully selected B&B's, home stays and small friendly motels (breakfast included).

2 days fully guided sea kayaking in the Abel Tasman National Park (including all meals, entrance fees and tent/camping equipment) additional days walking/sea kayaking in the Abel Tasman National Park available on request.

Difficulty

This is an intermediate level route with an average 50 to 80 kms cycling per day and a number of moderate hill climbs along the route.
